Partial request...

Those of you who read Nathan Bransford's blog will probably recognize one of the queries on his latest entry.

Why did I enter? Well, because I happened to read Nathan's blog today at 10:28 am. He posted the entry at 10:24 am. Most of the time, when I click on his blog and he's having a contest, I'm hours, even days too late. This time, I was right on time. So, I posted my query.

The cool thing is that he wrote to me this afternoon, requesting a partial!!! He'd sent me one of his 15-minute-later rejections when I queried him with my original version in March.  After getting my entry today, he pulled up my old query from his e-mail and wrote back saying, "I knew I had seen this one before!"  And he asked for 30 pages.

The less cool thing is that I feel kind of weird about his compliments on the blog, since mandywriter  helped a lot with it.  I mean, basically, she wrote it.  Then I then changed around the words to make it sound more like Seth.  And like me.  So, I feel like I'm getting more credit with that than I should.  I feel kind of awkward about it...

Rej of partial

I have wireless internet in my condo. But don't worry, I'm only using it occasionally. (For reals.) I got a rejection this morning. Who knew you could get rejections even in Hawaii?

Dear Ms. Scott,

Many thanks for sharing with me the opening chapters of your novel THE FAKE MCCOY, which I am declining with my regrets. I think it's a difficult balancing act to pull off a hero who does some pretty unlikeable things, and still be able to keep your readers interested in his rehabilitation. I'm afraid I just wasn't able to commit to reading on.

I appreciate your thinking of me, and wish you the best of luck in your search for representation.

Cheers, [agent]

I'm hoping for a call to come in while I'm at a luau tonight. Wouldn't that be the best? :-D

Weeeird.

I'm leaving. Soon. I should be in bed since the shuttle is coming to get me in less than five hours. But! I was looking for a notebook to take in my carry-on just now. I found one from July 2004. It was the original notes for what become my first YA. The main character was going to be named Lorey (later changed to Carah). Her boyfriend was Jason (later changed to be her not boyfriend, Bobby). His brother was Sean (who didn't end up existing in the story).

My current manuscript, started July/August 2008 has a main character named Kae. Her husband is Jason. His brother is Sean!

I swear, I had no recollection of these former names. And, truly, I'm not even that big a fan of the name Jason! (Because of some past associations.) What a weird thing to find.

Vacation!

I'm leaving for Hawaii in about twelve hours! Which means I probably won't be posting here until November. So, yeah. Since I've been being pretty regular with the postings lately, I thought I should let you all know so you won't think something dramatic happened to me. ;-)

Have a great week, everyone!

Narration.

I narrate my own life. Not all the time. Just occasionally. And only when I'm the only known human in the area. Like, just now, I ran downstairs. All four of the cats were hanging out in my living room. I greeted them with, "Hey, every meow."

Then I added a dialogue tag: "I say."

That's what I said!

"'Hey, every meow,' I say."

Oh, my.

(Interestingly, that's the first time I've ever caught myself narrating in present tense. Good to know my current WIP is getting that far into my mind!)
